Neag School Receives $300K Award to Support Mentor Education
Through a generous $300,000 award from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, high school seniors enrolled in the foundation’s Young Scholars Program will be able to pursue areas of interest and advanced learning for a three-week residential program housed on the University of Connecticut’s Storrs campus in the summer of 2018.
Neag School Hosts Annual Educational Leadership Forum in Hartford
Neag School of Education alumni, faculty, and administrators, along with educators from across the state, gathered at the Hartford Public Library’s Center for Contemporary Culture earlier this month for an evening of networking and insights from two dynamic Neag School alumni. Miguel Cardona’00 MA, ’04 6th Year, ’11 Ed.D, ’12 ELP, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning for Meriden (Conn.) Public Schools, and Bridget Heston Carnemolla ’13 Ed.D, ’14 ELP, superintendent for Watertown (Conn.) Public Schools, each shared insights into their experiences in the Neag School’s educational leadership program and personal revelations on leadership as the featured speakers for the Neag School’s third annual Educational Leadership Alumni Forum.
Professor Emeritus Vincent Rogers Bestows Innovation Grant
Neag School of Education professor emeritus Vincent Rogers has announced a planned bequest to the Neag School, designating a legacy gift of $125,000 to expand the Rogers Educational Innovation Fund in support of innovative projects carried out by teachers in Connecticut. Through his gift, elementary and middle-school teachers across the state will be able to apply annually for a $5,000 gift for use in the classroom.

Suzanne M. Wilson Named Curriculum and Instruction Department Head
Neag Endowed Professor of Teacher Education Suzanne M. Wilson has been named head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) at the Neag School. She takes over for Mary Anne Doyle, who served as department head for 17 years and returned to a faculty role to focus on literacy research.
UConn ScHOLA2RS House Students Experience Brazil
Led by Erik Hines, assistant professor of educational psychology, a group of UConn Learning Community students traveled to Brazil this spring thanks to a partnership with The Ohio State University. There, students took part in a range of immersive cultural, scholarly, and service-learning opportunities.

Neag School Welcomes Back Educational Leadership Alumni for Second Annual Forum
Following an evening of networking among more than 130 educational leadership alumni, students, and colleagues, two notable Neag School alumni — school principal Alicia Bowman and superintendent Joseph Macary — took to the stage to share their program experiences and insights on leadership during Neag School’s Second Annual Educational Leadership Alumni Forum, held Nov. 1 at UConn’s von der Mehden Hall in Storrs.
10 Questions With Three Future Teachers Studying in South Africa
Three Neag School students — Alexandra “Ali” Jabick ’16 (ED), ’17 MA, Cheyann Kelly ’16 (ED), ’17 MA, and Yizhi Wang ’16 (ED), ’17 MA — each in their fifth year of the Integrated Bachelor’s/Master’s program with a concentration in elementary education, are currently spending the semester in Cape Town, South Africa, where they are working at Christel House School, which is run entirely on donations and where all students are on full scholarship.
