Neag School Hosts Inaugural Teacher Leadership Academy in Storrs
This past July on the Storrs campus, 11 current teacher leaders representing 10 school districts from across the state spent five days engaged in a variety of learning activities during the inaugural Teacher Leadership Academy. The academy, hosted by the Neag School of Education from July 25-29, 2016, and co-directed by assistant professors Rachael Gabriel, Jennie Weiner, and Sarah Woulfin, was designed to enhance participants’ ability to support high-quality instruction, create conditions for reform, and lead change in Connecticut schools.

UConn Students Participate in “State of Black Males in the U.S.” Panel Discussion
In honor of Black History Month, UConn students gathered this past week at the University’s African-American Cultural Center for a panel discussion featuring six panelists from two student groups, Collective Uplift and Brothers Reaching Our Society (B.R.O.S.). Panelists discussed issues facing today’s African-Americans, including how Black males are and can continue to “take control over their own image.” These words, spoken by Joseph Cooper, assistant professor in the Neag School of Education and the founder of Collective Uplift, served as the driving force behind a discussion that touched on self-image, stereotypes, resiliency, and more.

‘Playing it Out’: LGBT Issues in Sport
Whether it’s the MLB, NFL, or NHL, the world of sports has been cast as a hypermasculine, hypercompetitive environment. While this atmosphere may build toughness and encourage physical fitness, its acceptance toward athletes who identify with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is still in need of practice.

CLAS Undergrad, Neag School Professor Selected for Funding on Collaborative Research Project
This spring, Marissa Gadacy ’17 (CLAS) and Neag School of Education assistant professor Devin Kearns will collaborate on research examining aspects of elementary school students’ reading comprehension skills, thanks to funding from UConn’s Office of Undergraduate Research, which selected their research proposal for one of its 2016 Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts Research Experience (SHARE) Awards.

Gladis Kersaint Named Dean of the Neag School of Education
Dr. Gladis Kersaint has been named the new dean of the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education. Kersaint, currently associate dean of academic affairs and research for the College of Education at the University of South Florida (USF), where she is also a professor of mathematics education, will begin in July.

As early as her freshman year, Neag School junior Emily Baseler ’17 (ED), ’18 MA has been coaching college students to be exceptional teachers and leaders through UConn Jumpstart, a national early education organization.

Neag School’s Educator Preparation Program Receives National Recognition
The Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut has been reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Neag School received national recognition in October for its commitment to producing quality educators for the nation’s children by continuously improving its diverse clinical and field experiences for students in its educator preparation programs
