Three UConn biomedical engineering students are using their college education to assist a Tolland endeavor: the creation of a handicap-accessible playground at the Cross Farms Recreation Center. Seniors Alyssa Smith, Christine Wakefield and Danielle Napoli are designing a sensory board for the children to interact with at the playground as part of their senior design project.

Umar Alqasemi, a graduate student advised by Dr. Quing Zhu in UConn's Optical and Ultrasound Imaging Laboratory, is working on technology that combines photo-acoustic imaging with ultrasound imaging to help physicians more accurately detect tumors.

On two Sundays in April, a dedicated group of UConn engineering students, led by Engineering Diversity Director Kevin McLaughlin, spent the day cleaning up Hartford's Pope Park.
