The UConn Health Center will fete three outstanding honorees for their contributions to medicine at the Fifth Annual White Coat Gala on April 12. The prestigious Carole and Ray Neag Medal of Honor recognizes legacies in treatment, education, public service or philanthropy. Recipients of the 2014 Neag Medal of Honor include philanthropists Richard and Jane Lublin, President of the UConn Health Center Auxiliary Irene Engel, and corporate philanthropist Cigna.
The Lublins are dedicated to the fight against cancer. The couple has committed more than $1 million to support cancer research and treatment at UConn’s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2013, the Lublins made the first substantial gift to support UConn’s growth through Bioscience Connecticut. Additionally, the Lublins are founding title sponsors of the White Coat Gala and annual sponsors of the UConn Cancer Research Golf Tournament.
Engel has been a fixture at the UConn Health Center since it opened its doors. She started her career at UConn in 1968, only nine months after the first medical and dental classes were admitted and before the existing hospital was built. Throughout her tenure as a nurse and eventually assistant dean for space planning and programs, Engel had a tremendous effect on patient care and shaping the UConn Health Center. Retired in name only, Engel remains president of the UConn Health Center Auxiliary, an organization she has helped steer since 1969.
Cigna, a global health service company, proudly supports the UConn Health Center through sponsorship of the Comcast NBC Connecticut Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride and Walk, as well as other community-based initiatives. Through its unique “Cigna Connects” approach to corporate responsibility, the work of the Cigna Foundation, and the passion for service of its people, Cigna is committed to improving the health, well-being and sense of security of individuals and communities everywhere.
UConn President Susan Herbst will serve as master of ceremonies with special guest host Joe D’Ambrosio, the Voice of the Huskies and host of “WTIC’s Sports Talk” on WTIC News Talk 1080. This special event brings together friends, donors, faculty and staff to celebrate and raise funds to support UConn’s mission. Proceeds will benefit UConn’s exciting construction, educational and research projects related to Bioscience Connecticut.
The White Coat Gala is supported by the generosity of our sponsors. Lead corporate sponsorship is provided by Cigna and the founding title sponsors are Richard and Jane Lublin.
