In order to keep you informed about the most pressing parking issues, a list of the most commonly asked question submitted to the Bioscience CT email box have been compiled and answered by Chief Administrative Officer Carolle Andrews and Deputy Police Chief Ray Bouchard.

Q: When will the construction start on the new Ambulatory Care Center/Parking Garage and where will employees park?

  • Construction begins in January 2013.
  • Valet service for the Medical Arts and Research Building (MARB), Farmington Surgery Center (FSC), and the Administrative Services Building (ASB) patients and visitors will begin on January 7, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cars will be parked in the L Lot.
  • The valet service will be located at the ground level entrance to the MARB.
  • The MARB and FSC parking lots will close during the week of January 14.
  • Between January 2 and January 11, faculty and staff from the MARB and FSC, and those who routinely park in the MARB and FSC parking lots, will be reassigned to new parking areas, including 400 Farmington Avenue.
  • The road by the ASB building leading to the MARB will be turned into two lanes.

Q. Where will patients who are scheduled for procedures at the Farmington Surgery Center park once the MARB parking lot is closed?

A: The valet service will be located near the front entrance to the MARB; all patients will be required to use the valet.

Q: Where is there open parking available on the Main Campus?

A: Open parking is available on Main Road, West and East Roads, Shuttle Lots 1 and 2, and the Aux (dirt) lot

Q: Where do I park if I can’t find a parking spot on campus?

A: Please call Public Safety, x2511 who will advise you where to park your vehicle.

Q: When will construction for the hospital parking garage be completed, and who will use it?

A: Construction of the new hospital parking garage started in September 2012 in the former I Lot.

  • The garage is expected to be completed in April of 2013.
  • Those displaced by the start of the construction of the new hospital tower, which begins in April, will be assigned to park in the new parking garage.

Q. How do I get to my car at night?

A: Public Safety will drive you to your car, after the shuttle service has ended for the day. This escort service can be reached at x2121 or by dialing 860-679-2121. An officer will meet you at the entrance of your building and will accompany you to your vehicle. Telephone access for this service is available 24 hours a day. Since officers may be tied up with an emergency or other critical police matters at that time, it’s best to call a few minutes before the end of your shift and expect that you may have to wait 10 to 15 minutes before they arrive.

Q: Is there open parking at the Exchange?

A: There is no open parking at the Exchange.

Q: Where are students parking?

A: Students have been asked to use the shuttle service that runs between the Forest, the Glen and the Academic Entrance. The majority of first year students are using the shuttle service. Upper class students who are on campus intermittently are asked to obtain parking assignments from Public Safety.

Q: Are shuttle bus drivers allowed to stop at stop signs/crosswalks to pick up or drop off individuals on request?

A: No. In an effort to prevent traffic from being interrupted and for the safety of riders, this is not allowed.

Q: When will the parking assignments be made? Will the tags be color coded?

A: Parking assignments are being phased in. As parkers are being displaced, they are being assigned to a specific parking lot and given the appropriate hang-tag. We will continue to communicate through Broadcast Messages which areas will be affected next.

A: Yes, the hang-tags are color coded.

Q: How will the Police Department know that my car is assigned to a specific parking lot?

A: You must display the hang-tag you were given with your lot assignment. You are also required to register your car with Public Safety, as was always required. Public Safety can also identify the vehicle’s owner through motor vehicle data, just as any other police force.

Q: If there are spaces available in other lots, can I park there even if I have a parking assignment?

A: No. You should park in your designated parking area or your vehicle will be ticketed.

Q: I’m worried that I haven’t been given a parking assignment and will not have a place to park.

A: Here is how the process works: Public Safety surveyed all of the lots on multiple occasions, over the course of several months, to identify who parks where. When changes occur, an email is sent to everyone that Public Safety has identified in an area that needs to be reassigned. This is not a perfect process. If you believe you should have been notified because that has been where you always park, contact Public Safety and you will be reassigned to an available spot. It is important that you notify Public Safety immediately because slots are filled quickly.

Q: What is the L lot being used for?

A: L lot is currently being used by the valet service to park cars that are being dropped off at the Main Hospital Entrance and starting January 2, the Medical Arts and Research Building (MARB).

Q: Is the Health Center exploring options for off-site parking at other locations?

A: Yes. The Health Center is finalizing negotiations with nearby properties to ensure a sufficient number of parking spaces.

Q: Will everyone have to pay to park? How much?

A: Convenience parking is currently paid parking. There are plans to expand paid parking in order to support the operation of new garages, and the expanded and perhaps continued, valet service.

Q: Who do I contact if I have additional questions?

A: Questions about parking or construction projects can be sent to the Bioscience CT email box.
