The UConn Health Center’s Dr. Cato T. Laurencin has been named to the advisory council of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).
The NIBIB advises the secretary and assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, the director of the National Institutes of Health, and the director of the NIBIB on matters concerning research, training, and health information dissemination. The NIBIB also offers counsel on other programs that address biomedical imaging, biomedical engineering, and associated technologies and procedures with biomedical applications.
Laurencin’s four-year term starts this month.
Laurencin is the director of the Institute for Regenerative Engineering at UConn and is the chief executive officer of the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. He recently was designated a university professor by the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees.
Laurencin is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. Most recently, the National Medical Association established an award in Laurencin’s name recognizing individuals with distinguished careers in science.
