Considered among the most prestigious neurosurgery organizations in US

Dr. Ketan Bulsara, chief of UConn Health’s Division of Neurosurgery, has been elected to membership of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery.

Bulsara joins an academy that counts the most elite neurosurgeons in North America among its membership going back to its founding in 1938. Bulsara, who joined UConn Health in 2017, is an expert in an unparalleled range of neurological interventions. He has trained with pioneers in the field throughout the world, has contributed to many national and international guidelines and standards, is renowned as one of the few neurosurgeons worldwide with a dedicated dual fellowship training in skull base/cerebrovascular microsurgery and endovascular surgery. In addition to his clinical contributions, he has made scientific contributions in the fields of cranial, spine, and peripheral nerve surgery.

“Dr Bulsara’s accomplishments are legion,” says Dr. Richard Simon, professor of neurosurgery and chief of the UConn John Dempsey Hospital medical staff. “He is a personable and skilled surgeon, and as a leader has brought an elite neurosurgical subspecialty capability to UConn Health, as well as a successful residency program. He already is well recognized at the national level, and this membership in the Academy of Neurological Surgery is yet another accolade underscoring his national prominence.”

Just this year, Bulsara also was inducted into Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society and elected as chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery.

He also has been elected to the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the oldest neurosurgical society in the world, comprised of the top leaders of neurosurgical education in the United States.

Bulsara has published three books and more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, including articles in the world’s highest cited journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Nature Genetics, Nature, and The Lancet. Earlier this year, he was part of a national panel that rewrote the guidelines for endovascular treatment of stroke.

The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) invited Bulsara to serve as an advisor to its Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Committee in 2022 and renewed his term this year.
