Professor Richard Pomp Honored by Tax Policy Group, Alumni

UConn Law Professor Richard Pomp, an internationally known expert in tax law, has been recognized by the American College of Tax Counsel and the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association.

In August, Pomp was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel. This distinction is granted to eminent lawyers and legal scholars whose careers are principally devoted to tax law and tax-related matters. Candidates for fellowship must be nominated by a current fellow and elected by the organization’s Board of Regents.

The American College of Tax Counsel is a nonprofit association that provides a mechanism for tax attorneys to contribute to the development of U.S. tax laws and policy. Of the 13 fellows elected in 2023, Pomp was one of only two academics.

Last month, Pomp received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association. The award was presented at the association’s Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on October 26, 2023.

“These well-deserved honors remind us that Professor Pomp is not only a pillar of the UConn Law community but also a distinguished leader in tax law and policy throughout the world,” Dean Eboni S. Nelson said. “His energy and charisma in the classroom have drawn countless students into rewarding and meaningful careers in tax law and beyond.”

Pomp joined the UConn Law faculty in 1976 and was named the Alva P. Loiselle Professor of Law in 1992. In 2022, he was named a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor, the highest distinction the University bestows on faculty members.

He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Congress and several U.S. government agencies, as well as the IMF, World Bank, United Nations and many national governments, including the People’s Republic of China, Zambia, Indonesia, Gambia, India and Mexico. He also served as director of the New York Tax Study Commission and oversaw the restructuring of New York’s personal and corporate income taxes.

Among the many awards Pomp has received are the Council on State Taxation’s Excellence in State Taxation,, the Tax Analysts’ State Tax Person of the Year, the Connecticut Law Tribune Professional Excellence Award, and the law school’s Perry Zirkel ’76 Distinguished Teaching Award.

Pomp is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan and a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. He has taught at Harvard, New York University, Columbia, the University of Texas, and Boston College. At UConn Law, he teaches Federal Income Taxation, Corporate Income Taxation, International Taxation, Tax Policy, State and Local Taxation and American Indian Taxation.
