On Saturday, May 5th, the School of Engineering celebrated commencement 2012 with fanfare, tradition and a palpable air of excitement. Before thousands of proud family members, friends and faculty seated expectantly in Gampel Pavilion on an overcast morning, more than 400 engineering students strode – some with relief and others with purpose – across the famed basketball court to receive their B.S. certificates and join the ranks of UConn engineering alumni.
Amid the pageantry of flags, brass music, speeches, choreographed entries and velveted robes, the new graduates glowed. A highlight of this year’s ceremonies was guest speaker Arunava Majumdar, who recently served as the nation’s first Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), who reminded the audience that engineers are the architects of the nation’s destiny. Few graduates are better equipped to grow the country’s economy, innovate, compete technologically and transcend barriers than UConn engineers.
