Achievement

Donald Beebe, a UConn 4-H New London County volunteer, is the northeastern regional winner of the 2024 National 4-H Salute to Excellence Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award. Beebe has dedicated countless hours to supporting Connecticut youth who participate in in 4-H, a program administered by UConn Extension with UConn’s College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources.

Dr. Ketan Bulsara, a professor and chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, has been named a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. Sigma Xi is the world’s largest multidisciplinary honor society for scientists and engineers. Bulsara has also been elected as chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery.

Eileen Carter and Mallory Perry-Eaddy, two faculty from the School of Nursing, will be Inducted as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing. The 2024 Class of Fellows represents a cross-section of nursing’s most dynamic leaders who are making positive changes in their systems and communities to champion health and wellness.

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, University Professor and Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, will receive the Gold Key Award from the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society on November 16. The Gold Key Award is the Society’s highest honor, presented to a member who has made extraordinary scientific contributions and fostered critical innovations.

School of Social Work research associate Samantha E. Lawrence was honored by the Rosalind Franklin Society with its 2023 RFS Award in Science for the best paper by a woman in science or underrepresented minority in a Liebert peer-reviewed journal. Lawrence’s paper “Bullying involvement at the intersection of gender identity, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and disability: Prevalence disparities and the protective power of school-related developmental assets,” was published in LGBT Health.

Accounting professor and department head George Plesko has been selected to serve on the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business Accounting Accreditation Committee, an appointment that reflects his educational expertise and engagement within the accounting industry. The non-profit organization seeks to elevate the quality and impact of business schools worldwide.

Paul Goetinck, 91, of Wellfleet, Mass., a retired biology professor who taught from 1964 to 1985, on July 15.

John Hoben, 88, of Canton, Conn., a former adjunct professor in counseling at UConn Waterbury and UConn Torrington.

Barbara Luetjen, 79, of Ellington, Conn., a former employee, on July 27.

John Tavares, 75, of Mashpee, Mass., a UConn Health retiree, on July 8.
