Up until a few years ago, freezing fertilized embryos was by far the more successful of the two cryopreservation options. But with the development of a freezing technique known as vitrification, that’s changed, said Dr. John C. Nulsen, director and a lead physician at UConn’s Center for Advanced Reproductive Services.

UConn Bringing Health Services to Storrs Center

Associated Press, Sept. 28, 2013

The school’s board of trustees this week approved spending $858,000 for a full-service dental clinic that will open in the center in February with five exam rooms.”There has never been the availability of dental services at the school’s infirmary,” said Dr. Steven M. Lepowsky, chairman of UConn’s Division of General Dentistry. “Over the years we’ve had a lot of students as well as staff and faculty travel from Storrs to Farmington for care, which isn’t always the most convenient thing.”

Heart Health the Focus of Women’s Health Breakfast

The breakfast will be hosted by Bruce Liang, MD, director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center and the Ray Neag Distinguished Professor of Vascular Biology. The featured guest speaker will be Annabelle Rodriguez-Oquendo, MD, FAHA, professor of cell biology and the Linda and David Roth Chair of Cardiovascular Research at the UConn Health Center and a fellow at the American Heart Association.

Flu’s Coming, Get a Shot

Hartford Courant, Sept. 26, 2013

Dr. Laura Haynes, at the University of Connecticut Health Center, said older people are more susceptible both to getting the flu and to developing flu-related complications. “Secondary bacterial pneumonia is really common and quite deadly,” she said. “Stroke is a very common occurrence and there are more cardiac events for older folks.”
