Dr. Laura Haynes, at the University of Connecticut Health Center, said older people are more susceptible both to getting the flu and to developing flu-related complications. “Secondary bacterial pneumonia is really common and quite deadly,” she said. “Stroke is a very common occurrence and there are more cardiac events for older folks.”
