The Second Annual Women’s Health Breakfast is coming up on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Pond House Cafe in West Hartford. The topics will include the genetic connection between heart disease and infertility; and cholesterol management and prevention of heart disease in women.
The Women’s Health Breakfast focuses on a different important theme in women’s health each year. This event provides guests an opportunity to hear about the latest research and advances in care from experts across the UConn Health Center. Following the successful inaugural event last fall on 3D mammography, this year’s event will focus on women’s heart health.
Good heart health is vital for women of all ages. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. More women die of heart disease every year than men. Approximately one woman dies of heart disease every minute.
The breakfast will be hosted by Dr. Bruce Liang, director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center and the Ray Neag Distinguished Professor of Vascular Biology. The featured guest speaker will be Dr. Annabelle Rodriguez-Oquendo, professor of cell biology and the Linda and David Roth Chair of Cardiovascular Research at the UConn Health Center and a fellow at the American Heart Association. Before joining the UConn Health Center in 2012, Rodriguez-Oquendo was a professor at Johns Hopkins and founder of Lipid Genomics Inc. Her infertility research is supported by the National Institutes of Health. The program will include a special introduction by Linda Shapiro, director of the Center for Vascular Biology and associate professor of cell biology.
