The head of the UConn Health Center’s Injury Prevention and Sports Outreach Programs is back from Haiti, where he led a sports medicine training conference.
Dr. Thomas Trojian and six other members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine shared their expertise with nearly 300 physicians, medical students, athletic trainers and first responders.
Also taking part in the Sports Medicine/Sports Trauma and Event Medicine Conference were Dr. Anthony Alessi, associate clinical professor of neurology, and Dr. Cory Edgar, a former UConn sports medicine fellow who is joining the faculty next month.
Trojian was elected to the AMSSM board of directors in 2011. He chairs the its International and Inter-organizational Relations Committee, an initiative to reach sports medicine societies in underserved areas of the world to promote healthy lifestyles and heal people from athletic injuries.
“AMSSM is interested in promoting the health of athletic people here in the United States and throughout the world, and that is one of the reasons we decided to do this,” Trojian says. “If we can equip the physicians, trainers and first responders in Haiti with the tools and skills needed to improve athletic care of their patients, we will have succeeded.”
The conference, held in Port-au-Prince June 29 through July 3, covered four primary components:
- Demonstrations of musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided and surgical procedures
- An introduction to sports medicine course for medical students
- Lectures on topics including concussion, sideline management and pre-participation screenings for cardiac issues
- Clinical time spent with Haitian physicians treating patients
Trojian is a team physician for several UConn athletic programs, including the women’s basketball team, as well as a number of local high school athletic programs.
