If you work, volunteer or study at the UConn Health Center, chances are you know the Employee Health Service clinic as the place to go for a flu shot or tuberculosis screening.

But did you know it also is a resource for dealing with minor ailments or injuries while on the job?

“It’s a worksite alternative to having to leave campus for a walk-in clinic or your primary care office, if you’re fortunate enough that they can squeeze you in,” says Dr. Marc Croteau, EHS medical director. “We’re talking about acute problems or minor episodic illnesses: sore throats, rashes, respiratory infections, work-related or not.”

For example, an employee notices an eye irritation. Recognizing the risk that it could be conjunctivitis, which is highly contagious, he calls EHS, which tells him to come in an hour later. The employee clears the time with his supervisor, then takes the Main Line shuttle to the Exchange, where the clinic is housed on the second floor, Suite 262. He pays his usual co-pay, the appointment minimizes the wait time, and the employee can, if appropriate, return to his job in a timely fashion.

Compare that to the employee trying to get a same-day appointment with his primary care physician. Even if the doctor’s schedule could accommodate that request, consider the time lost if the employee had to retrieve his car and travel to and from the off-campus or out-of-town visit.

“This really is a win-win,” Croteau says. “The employee receives prompt care and doesn’t have to use nearly as much sick time.”

The EHS clinic is also open to students, residents, employees of contractors, and volunteers. Hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone number is 860-679-2893.
