UConn Gets Grant for Genome Research

In what could further bolster hopes of making the state a hub for genomics research, a UConn Health Center researcher has received a $9.3 million grant as part of the massive international effort to better understand the human genome.
Iron Levels and Breast Cancer

UConn Health Center researchers are discovering that in animal studies a decreased presence of a specific iron protein in breast cancer cells leads to tumor growth. Led by principal investigator, Dr. Suzy Torti, the researchers are finding there is a link between breast cancer and levels of iron.

“Screening with a Smile” is a new program taking place at the UConn Health Center and funded by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Dr. Alex Merkulov says underserved and high risk women seeking free dental care through the UConn Health Center Advanced Education in General Dentistry program will be recruited, educated, counseled, and offered a free mammogram.
