How do we hear and interpret sound? In this Horizons video, Dr. Monty Escabi, associate professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, describes the hearing process and his research aimed at revealing how the brain processes and identifies real world sounds – such as speech, back-ground noise and animal vocalizations. Dr. Escabi touches upon novel alternatives to cochlear implants that may enable the hearing-impaired to have hearing-like sensation that more closely mimics real hearing.
