UConn Establishing Genomics Institute

As Bioscience Connecticut and the partnership with The Jackson Laboratory take shape, the University of Connecticut is announcing plans to establish a Genomics Institute.

In a message to faculty, staff and students today, Dr. Frank Torti, incoming vice president for health affairs and medical school dean, and Peter Nichols, UConn provost and executive vice president, describe the institute as “truly transformational for our university.”

A committee tasked with “developing an innovative, interdisciplinary structure that will foster breakthroughs in research and training collaborations in genomics” will include representatives from across the University:

  • Chair: Marc Lalande, associate dean for research planning and coordination and professor, Genetics and Developmental Biology, School of Medicine
  • Dr. Larry Silbart, professor and department head, Allied Health Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Dashzeveg Bayarsaihan, associate professor, Reconstructive Sciences,
    School of Dental Medicine
  • Carl Maresh, professor and department head, Kinesiology, Neag School of Education
  • Dong-Guk Shin, professor, Computer Science and Engineering, School of Engineering
  • Michelle Williams, associate professor of psychology and associate dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • Xiaomei Cong, assistant professor, nursing, School of Nursing
  • Theodore Rasmussen, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology, School of Pharmacy
  • Linda Strausbaugh, professor, Molecular and Cell Biology. Provost’s Office

The planning committee expects to complete its work by June.

“The Institute will focus on advanced research and training in genome science and technology that will raise the profile of genomics at UConn and maximize our relationship with the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine on the Health Center’s campus in Farmington,” according to Torti and Nichols.
