John Ivan, professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, is one of four authors on a paper selected by the Transportation Research Board to receive the TRB Committee ANB20 (Safety Data, Analysis & Evaluation) 2012 Outstanding Paper Award. Dr. Ivan’s co-authors on the paper, entitled “Long-term Safety Trends Related to Vehicle Ownership in 26 Countries,” were Drs. Attila Borsos and Csaba Koren of Szechenyi Istvan University, Hungary, and Dr. Nalini Ravishanker, a professor of Statistics at UConn. They will receive their award officially at the TRB Annual Meeting in January 2013.

Ph.D. candidate Justin Roller (Materials Science & Engineering) was awarded a $20,000 graduate fellowship by the Connecticut Space Grant Consortium in November 2011. The Space Grant Consortium is a national network of colleges and universities working to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA’s aeronautics and space projects by supporting and enhancing science and engineering education, research and public outreach efforts. Justin, who is advised by Dr. Radenka Maric, was previously employed at the Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation in Vancouver, BC. His Fellowship research, to be conducted under the guidance of Malgorzata Gulbinska at Yardney Technical Products, involves the development of a lithium ion battery cathode materials in support of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD).

Quing Zhu, professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, has been invited to serve as a member of the Biomedical Imaging Technology – B Study Section in the Center for Scientific Review (CSR), a unit of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Zhu was selected on the basis of her scholarly achievements.  The CSR is the portal for NIH grant applications and their review for scientific merit. Her four-year term will begin on July 1, 2012.
