March 27 Atlanta Reception: The School of Engineering, in collaboration with the School of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), School of Law and Alumni Association, will hold an alumni networking reception and panel discussion on Managing Challenges in Globalization in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday March 27, 2012.
The event will feature a 6-7 PM networking and cocktail reception followed by the 7 PM panel discussion. Dean of Engineering Mun Choi will discuss “Sustainable Engineering of the Future”; Dr. Chinmoy Ghosh, Head of the Department of Finance & Gladstein Professor of Innovation in the School of Business, will discuss “Issues in Global Risk Management”; and Dr. Jeffrey O.G. George Abe (M.S. Ocean Engineering, ‘85) was named CEO of Emerald Bio, of Bainbridge Island, WA. The company is a leading provider of protein science solutions. Mr. Abe was most recently CEO of Cambridge Research and Instrumentation (CRi). The company was acquired by Caliper Life Sciences, now Perkin Elmer, where he served as Senior Vice President, Tissue Imaging. He has also held senior positions at several high technology organizations, including technology pioneer, BBN. Mr. Abe has also served on the board of directors of several public and private medical device and technology companies.
Barry Dupen (B.S. Mechanical Engineering/Materials Engineering, ‘87; M.S., Ph.D. Metallurgy, ’89, ‘94) is an associate professor in the Department of Manufacturing and Construction Engineering Technology and Interior Design at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, IN.
Shar Govindan (M.S. Civil Engineering ’03) delivered a special Engineers Week lecture at UConn before a large audience of engineering students, faculty and staff on the subject, “Business Social Media: A Technology Careerist’s Perspective.” Shar is Director for Social Learning for Bentley Systems Inc. and a contributing author to the book Social BOOM!
