Editor’s Corner profiles top journals edited by our faculty members. Today, we highlight the editorial contributions of Dr. Robert Gao, the Pratt & Whitney Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering, who serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, Mechatronics, International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering. He also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Manufacturing Research, and he previously served as Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control (2005-2008).

Journal Content: Papers address innovative solutions to the development and use of electrical and electronic instruments and equipment to measure, monitor and/or record physical phenomena for the purpose of advancing measurement science, methods, functionality and applications. The scope of these papers may encompass: (1) theory, methodology, and practice of measurement; (2) design, development and evaluation of instrumentation and measurement systems and components used in generating, acquiring, conditioning and processing signals; (3) analysis, representation, display, and preservation of the information obtained from a set of measurements; and (4) scientific and technical support to establishment and maintenance of technical standards in the field of Instrumentation and Measurement.

Journal Content: A journal of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and manufacturing processes. It relates to the design of systems, devices and products aimed at achieving an optimal balance between basic mechanical structure and its overall control. The purpose of this journal is to provide rapid publication of topical papers featuring practical developments in mechatronics. It will cover a wide range of application areas including consumer product design, instrumentation, manufacturing methods, computer integration and process and device control, and will attract a readership from across the industrial and academic research spectrum. Particular importance is attached to aspects of innovation in mechatronics design philosophy which illustrate the benefits obtainable by an a priori integration of functionality with embedded microprocessor control. A major item will be the design of machines, devices and systems possessing a degree of computer based intelligence. The journal seeks to publish research progress in this field with an emphasis on the applied rather than the theoretical. It will also serve the dual role of bringing greater recognition to this important area of engineering.

Journal Content: The Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering serves as a vehicle for the rapid dissemination of original theoretical and applied research results of permanent interest in all branches of manufacturing. The majority of the papers published are peer-reviewed full-length articles of considerable depth. The journal also publishes technical briefs, design innovation papers, reviews, discussions of published papers with rebuttal, book reviews, and editorials.
