The period of October 15-21 also includes discussions, lunch-and-learn sessions, and a dinner Monday, October 17, at the Farmington Club featuring a keynote address from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.
Malloy is expected to discuss how to increase the numbers of students in state medical and dental schools making generalist career choices and staying in Connecticut to practice. His Bioscience Connecticut initiative includes a loan forgiveness program for medical and dental school graduates who pursue careers in primary care in the state.
The theme of National Primary Care Week 2011 is “Innovations in Primary Care.” Details on the scheduled talks are available at http://publichealth.uconn.edu/npcw.php.
The health fairs will take place in the greater Hartford, Willimantic and Hamden areas from1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 19. Students will provide free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings as well as preventive health education materials for oral health, nutrition, medication interaction education, heart health and diabetes prevention.
The UConn students will be joined at the health fairs by physician assistant students and faculty from Quinnipiac University and community clinicians.
