Tom Callahan, interim chief of staff and project director, and Tom Trutter, associate vice president of facilities development and operations, gave a progress update on the six-year project, complete with schematic renderings of the new hospital tower and two new parking garages. A large architect’s model of what the upper campus will look like by the year 2018 was set up in Keller lobby.

The Health Center is currently in the schematic design process for several aspects of Bioscience Connecticut, such as:

  • A new hospital tower to be constructed by late 2015
  • Renovations to John Dempsey Hospital to be completed in early 2018
  • Renovations to the existing lab space in the main building to be completed in two phases, by early 2014 and by mid-2016
  • The first phase of a new Ambulatory Care Center to be constructed by mid-2014.

“The only building that won’t be touched over the next six years will be the ARB, the academic research building,” said Callahan. Going forward, updates on the project will be held on a regular basis, he added.

Bioscience Connecticut is part of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s plan to jump-start the state’s economy. It is a multifaceted plan that aims to strengthen the state’s position as a national and global center for bioscience innovation and improve access to quality healthcare for Connecticut citizens, while simultaneously securing the UConn Health Center’s future as a top-tier academic medical center.
