Two alumni, Rabih M. Barakat (B.S. Civil Engineering, ’93) P.E. and MBA, and Ronald J. Nault (B.S. Civil Engineering, ’84), P.E., have been elected to offices in the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers. Rabih, who is employed with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, was elected a Director I; and Ronald, who is employed with Luchs Consulting Engineering LLC and DeCarlo & Doll Architects/Engineers, was elected a Director II.

James Moriarty (B.S. Civil Engineering, ’10) is a Project Manager with the Connecticut office of Comfort Systems USA Energy Services, Windsor. James consults with customers on a variety of energy engineering projects, from preliminary benchmarking of facilities through detailed energy modeling for LEED submissions. He also works on a variety of projects from healthcare, multifamily residential, office, and renovations. Comfort Systems USA offers customers engineered solutions that deliver more efficient building systems such as heating, cooling and lighting. James, who founded the UConn Green Building Club and served as its first president, is also earning his Engineer-in-Training Certification.

Sharon Nunes (Ph.D. Materials Science, ‘83), Vice President, Smarter Cities Strategy & Solutions, IBM Corporation, will speak at the GLOBE 2012 high level Conference Session on Access to Water. She will discuss the technological challenges and business opportunities associated with the provision of water infrastructure, and in particular the use of information-based solutions to ensure adequate access to safe water supplies for all.

Brian J. Sprague (B.S. Electrical Engineering, ‘84) was named Vice President and General Manager, Broadband and Consumer Products for MaxLinear Inc., a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communication applications. Over his 27 year career, Mr. Sprague has worked in a variety of engineering and marketing roles at United Technologies Corporation, LSI Logic Inc., and Broadcom Corporation.

Salay Stannard (B.S. Materials Science & Engineering, ‘09) was promoted to Materials Engineering Manager at Joining Technologies, Inc., an innovator in industrial laser applications.  In her new role, Salay will be involved in setting strategic goals for technical sales and marketing and will also be responsible for implementing creative research strategies for electron beam welding, laser welding and additive manufacturing.  She is simultaneously pursuing her master’s degree in MSE, with a focus on laser welding materials and process interactions. She has been a process development engineer at Joining Technologies since 2009.
