UConn was recently invited to join TRUCEN, The Research University Civic Engagement Network, a prestigious network of about 35 research universities.

Established in 2008, TRUCEN works to advance civic engagement and engaged scholarship among research universities and create resources and models for use across higher education. TRUCEN calls upon research universities to embrace a bold vision for civic and community engagement and work to make this vision a reality. Campus Compact, the national organization for service-learning, serves as the secretariat for the TRUCEN network.

Colleges and universities across the country are increasing their efforts to engage their surrounding communities, and TRUCEN members are at the forefront.

In February, Robert McCarthy, dean of the School of Pharmacy and director of the Provost’s Commission on Public Engagement, represented UConn at the TRUCEN annual meeting held at Georgetown University, another TRUCEN member.

McCarthy joined deans, vice provosts, and center directors from other member universities to discuss a wide range of topics, including engaged scholarship, student participation, and community partnerships.
