As of this fall, three cultural studies institutes along with the Women’s Studies program are now part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Anne Hiskes, an associate professor of philosophy, has been selected by Dean Jeremy Teitelbaum to be interim associate dean of CLAS and will oversee the integration of these programs into the college. Her appointment in CLAS is for one year.

Hiskes, also a special assistant to the provost, was previously an American Council on Education fellow. Her fellowship allowed her to focus on interdisciplinary and integrative programs, among other elements of higher education administration.

Hiskes says she is excited to put her experience into practice working with the faculty and staff of Women’s Studies and the three cultural studies institutes in their transition into CLAS.

“The interdisciplinary research and programming of these units provide important insights into the ever-evolving and often subtle roles played by gender, race, and ethnicity in shaping our personal, social, professional, and national identities and experiences,” she says. “Integrating these programs into the life of CLAS will provide new opportunities for interactions and collaborations that strengthen and enrich the educational and scholarly programs of both the departments and these interdisciplinary units.”

The goal of CLAS is to build up the research contributions the institutes make to the humanities and social sciences programs within the college.

Cathy Schlund-Vials, director of the Asian American Studies Institute, says she and her colleagues appreciate the opportunities afforded by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the level of research and administrative support.

“Dr. Hiskes has been a consistent advocate for diversity at UConn,” she adds. “We look forward to working with her as the Asian American Studies Institute moves forward.”
