The 19th annual Light the Lodge Powwow will be held at the University of Connecticut’s Storrs campus on Sunday, April 18. It will feature Native American singing, dancing, traditional crafts, vendors, and food, and will take place from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Dow Field in the center of campus.

The event is free. Donations are welcome and will go toward UConn’s Native American Cultural Society.

The purpose of the Powwow is to showcase Native American culture and its enduring spirit. Central to any Powwow are the drum circles, and the Light the Lodge Powwow will feature some of the best in New England including Mystic River, Quabbin Lake, and Northern Coup. Accompanying the drums will be native dancers dressed in their most impressive regalia. There will also be a variety of vendors, selling hand-made items such as leather goods, jewelry, and artwork. Food vendors will provide visitors with an opportunity to get a taste of authentic native food.

The Grand Entry will occur at noon.

Much of the event will be held under a large tent on Dow Field but, in the event of a more sustained rainfall, the Powwow will move inside Gampel Pavilion.
