Dr. Kumares C. Sinha (M.S. Municipal Engineering ’66, Ph.D. Civil Engineering ’68) will receive the 2009 Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award from the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in recognition of his outstanding achievement in transportation research and education. Dr. Sinha is the Edgar B. & Hedwig M. Olson Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Joint Transportation Research Program of Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Dr. Sinha, who has participated in TRB committees and activities for more than three decades, will receive the award during the TRB 89th Annual Meeting in January 2010.
During his career, Dr. Sinha has made important, wide-ranging research contributions in the areas of highway infrastructure performance, rehabilitation, and safety; headed a vibrant civil engineering education and research program at Purdue University; and provided expert guidance that has shaped infrastructure management systems and practices used throughout the nation and the world.
He has authored or co-authored more than 400 journal articles and publications, including a recent book, Transportation Decision Making: Principles of Project Evaluation and Programming. He served as the President of the Transportation & Development Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), President of the Research and Education Division of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), President of the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC), and as a member of the Federal Advisory Council on Transportation Statistics.
He has received numerous honors, including election to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering in 2008.
