George R. Rumney, emeritus professor of geography, died April 25, 2009, aged 94. He joined the University in 1948 and taught at UConn for 35 years.
Highlights of his career include re-establishing the Department of Geography as a separate department (originally established in 1931, it had incorporated geology in 1940); founding the Marine Sciences Institute at the Avery Point Campus; and his publications: Climatology and the World’s Climates; The Geosystem: Dynamic Integration of Land, Sea, and Air; and the history of climatology published in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Donations in his memory may be made to the University of Connecticut Foundation, with “In Memory of George Rumney, to support the Fund for Marine Sciences” in the memo line, and mailed to the UConn Foundation Inc., 2390 Alumni Drive, Storrs, CT 06269-3206.
An informal gathering of colleagues and friends will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Marine Science Institute and Technology Center, at the Avery Point campus.
